LearnLinc 4.0 & Windows 2000 (May 11/2000)

LearnLinc v4.0 - Recent tests of LearnLinc 4.0 running under Windows 2000 have revealed a serious potential issue with the Custom installer.  Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you install LearnLinc 4.0 on a Windows 2000 machine using the "Custom Installation" option from either the Virtual Campus or the CD-ROM.  Doing so may render the operating system unbootable.  This issue will be fixed in LearnLinc 4.5, due to release soon.

All other LearnLinc 4.0 installation options (including the "Typical" and "Full-Multimedia" options) worked properly in our tests under Windows 2000, with one minor caveat:  if you are installing on Windows 2000 and are connecting through a proxy server, you may have to manually set your proxy settings in the LearnLinc client control panel after you have completed the installation.

Other than these important issues, we are pleased to announce that all other LearnLinc client functionality worked properly in our tests.  The result of these tests is that we will now officially support LearnLinc 4.0 on Windows 2000.

LearnLinc v3.1 Server and Microsoft ODBC Drivers (Sept 20/1999)

LearnLinc v3.1 - During testing, we have found that the LearnLinc v3.1 server is incompatible with the recent Microsoft ODBC drivers version 4.00.3711.08 (02/05/99).  These new ODBC drivers are installed by products such as MS Office 2000, MS Media Services 4.0, Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and more.  If you wish to install new products on your LearnLinc server such as MS Office 2000, please make sure to install them on a "dummy" server first to test and see whether the ODBC drivers are upgraded to the new version.  If you do happen to install the new ODBC drivers on a LearnLinc v3.1 server system, there are only two options available to you:

  1. Upgrade LearnLinc to version 4.0 (available now) which does not share this incompatibility with LearnLinc v3.1. If you have a maintenance and support contract for LearnLinc, you should have received this upgrade automatically.  If you do not, and you wish to receive the LearnLinc version 4.0 upgrade, please contact our office.
  2. Erase your server's primary hard drive and reinstall Windows NT and LearnLinc server from scratch. This is to be done with advanced planning and extreme caution by a professional.
Note: DETAC shall not be held responsible for damages resulting from your attempting this procedure - proceed at your own risk!

Please note that this affects the LearnLinc v3.1 server only.  Clients are not affected.
